UWC Thailand Sustainability Update: Learning, Acting, and Growing Together

UWC Thailand recently hosted the Staff Sustainability Meeting, bringing together students, parents, teaching staff, boarding staff, administrative teams, and members of our wider community. It was inspiring to see such a diverse group gathered with a shared purpose: strengthening our sustainability practices and learning from one another.

The session included a series of hands-on mini-workshops, each designed to deepen our collective understanding of environmental stewardship and to offer practical actions that can be implemented across campus. Below is a summary of the themes explored, along with resources and next steps.

Mini Sessions and Learning Resources

Mindfulness and Sustainability
Participants explored ways to connect mindful habits with sustainable decision-making. Practice materials are available for anyone who would like to try these approaches.

Gardening and the Sustainability Compass
Materials included guidance from Compass Education, an introduction to Gaia Ashram, and access to the Permaculture Resource Hub.

Mastering Campus Recycling
The Green Machine station near Lost and Found continues to support accurate waste sorting. Clear labels and new bins help the community develop confidence in recycling correctly.

Precious Plastics
Our plastic shredder and extruder have been ordered, paving the way for hands-on learning and small-scale plastic repurposing.

Eco-bricks and Drive Cleaning
Eco-brick bottles will be placed in offices with simple instructions. These bottles serve both as a collection method and as a reminder of mindful consumption.

Upcycling through Glass Bottle Painting
Beautifully painted bottles with plant cuttings are now displayed around campus, showcasing creativity and reuse.

Building a Compost Station
A new instructional banner will soon be placed at the compost area to help staff and students understand the process step by step.

Global Schools Programme
We will continue identifying visible and practical ways to integrate Global Schools materials into our curriculum and daily practice.

Mangrove Potting
Our collaboration with Dream for Trees continues. Students are finalising the guide titled Restoring Roots: How to Start a Mangrove Nursery, which will be shared soon. We recommend the Mangrove Guide by Nature-Minded for further learning.

Stingless Bees
A new banner and additional information are being prepared to help the community learn more about these essential pollinators.

Sustainability in Boarding
Energy, water use, composting, and recycling were key topics of discussion. Student-led suggestions will shape the next phase of action in the boarding houses.

Plastic Free Phuket
A reminder from our local partners: recycled materials brought back to campus must be properly sorted to support effective processing.

Call for Support

If you visit the beach, please collect any mangrove seed pods you find. Adding them to our mangrove nursery supports local ecosystem restoration and strengthens our students’ ongoing conservation work.

Upcoming Actions and Projects

Thai Language Sustainability Session
An upcoming session for our cleaning team will be held in Thai, with student support to ensure the training is inclusive and accessible.

Low-Waste Events
For future campus events, we will collaborate with vendors, parents, and students to reduce disposable waste and encourage the use of reusable utensils.

Green Investment Fund
More details from the International Office will be shared soon. With recent energy data and quotations from several solar providers, we are well positioned to explore long-term solutions. Everyone can help by keeping air-conditioning at 25°C and ensuring classroom doors remain closed when AC is in use. Students are preparing additional materials and signage to support this effort.

UWC Ride to Thrive: Community Bike Week
From 1 to 7 December, the entire community is invited to take part in Ride to Thrive, a cycling initiative created by our Grade 5 students. By tracking our collective distance, we aim to cycle 1,600 kilometres, the length of Thailand. The week encourages lower emissions, healthier routines, a sense of community, and the joy of riding together. Daily morning rides, log sheets, and recognition for top riders will help make this a memorable and meaningful event for all.

Updates on Campus Sustainability Tools

Smart Bin AI in the Canteen
Our Smart Bin system continues to support real-time monitoring of food waste. By analysing the percentage of uneaten food left on plates, it generates detailed reports that help us adjust menus, reduce waste, and raise awareness. Globally, one-third of all food produced is wasted. Systems like this help our school contribute to global efforts toward reduction.

Recycling Centre
We will be featuring our Recycling Centre again soon. It plays a central role in waste management on campus and supports ongoing student-led initiatives.

Sustainable Loy Krathong Practices

In honour of Thailand’s Loy Krathong celebration, we encourage everyone to create simple, environmentally friendly Krathongs. Avoiding unnecessary decorations helps reduce waste while preserving the beauty of this cultural tradition. All leftover banana leaves from preparations have been placed at the campus compost station for reuse.

Rethread: Mending, Reusing, and Creating

Rethread, one of our after-school activity clubs, began with students repairing elastics and embroidery on worn school uniforms. It has since expanded to include making scrunchies from second-hand fabric, sewing mantas using recycled cotton, and creating reusable pads in collaboration with the UWC Moshi women’s empowerment group. The club demonstrates how thoughtful, student-led initiatives can promote sustainability and social responsibility simultaneously.
