Unlocking Potential: The Benefits of Speech and Language Therapy for Primary and Secondary Students
Claire Banks, UWC Thailand Speech and Language Therapist

In this month's newsletter, we shine a spotlight on our Speech and Language Therapist, Claire Banks! Claire, hailing from Australia, has spent the past 5 years working in Cambodia before joining our UWC Thailand community.

The phrase "communication is key" is more than just a saying; it's the cornerstone of human interaction. At UWC Thailand, mastering speech and language skills can be a challenge for some students. A Speech and Language Therapist like Claire plays a vital role in fostering and supporting effective communication skills. Working in collaboration with educators, parents, and other professionals, Claire assesses, diagnoses, and provides targeted interventions for students facing communication challenges, focusing on issues such as speech sound disorders, language delays, fluency disorders (such as stuttering), and social communication challenges.

Here's how Speech and Language Therapy is benefiting our students at UWC Thailand:

Improved Academic Performance: Effective communication is fundamental to academic success. Therapy targets key areas such as vocabulary development, comprehension, and expressive language, which are crucial for reading, writing, and participating in the classroom. Enhancing these skills allows students to better understand lessons, express their ideas clearly, and engage more confidently in learning activities.

Enhanced Social Skills: Beyond the classroom, communication is essential in social settings. For students, especially those with social communication disorders like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), navigating social interactions can be challenging. Therapy offers strategies to improve conversational skills, interpret nonverbal cues, and understand social norms, thereby enhancing peer relationships and boosting self-confidence.

Boosted Self-Confidence: Communication difficulties can lead to frustration and affect self-esteem. Through therapy, students learn to overcome these obstacles and gain confidence in their abilities. Progress in articulation, language comprehension, and social interaction boosts their self-assurance, empowering them to face academic and social challenges.

Early Intervention: Early identification and intervention of communication challenges are crucial for academic and social success. Speech and language therapists work closely with teachers and parents to identify early signs of communication disorders and provide timely interventions, facilitating quicker progress and reducing the likelihood of long-term difficulties.

Individualised Support: Recognising that each student is unique, speech and language therapy offers personalised interventions tailored to individual needs. Through assessment, personalised intervention plans, and progress monitoring, therapists ensure that students receive the specific support they need to reach their full potential.

At UWC Thailand, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive support to all our students, including those facing communication challenges. Through our Speech and Language Therapy programme, we aim to empower every student to communicate effectively, excel academically, and foster meaningful relationships.
