Student Reflections: Pho3nix Futures Camp Experience

Student Reflections: Pho3nix Futures Camp Experience
UWC Thailand

Isabella, grade 11 (United Kingdom)
“When I found out I had been accepted to the Pho3nix Futures Camp, I felt incredibly grateful. It reminded me of how much work my coaches and I have invested in training, and it was exciting to be part of such a new and meaningful experience.

Being at Pho3nix opened my eyes to what a true high-performance environment looks like. Through business workshops, media training, goal-setting sessions and other activities, I gained a deeper understanding of the many elements that shape an athlete’s journey. These skills are valuable, and I know I can apply them far beyond the pool.

Returning from the camp, I have a clearer sense of what it means to show up consistently. Most importantly, I hope to support younger swimmers and share what I’ve learned so we can grow together as a team.”

What was your first reaction when you found out you had been invited to the Pho3nix camp?
“I felt excited and grateful to be invited to the Pho3nix Futures Camp. It’s something I have wanted to join for a long time, so receiving the news felt incredibly special. I have worked hard over the years, balancing early mornings, long sessions, schoolwork and competitions, and this invitation made all those sacrifices feel worth it.

I was also grateful to my coach, who encourages me every day and believes in me even on the tough mornings. Knowing that the camp selects only a small group of dedicated athletes made the moment even more meaningful and motivated me even further.”

How do you feel this opportunity will help you grow as an athlete, both in and out of the pool?
“I believe this opportunity will help me grow in many ways. In the pool, I’m excited to learn new training methods, refine my technique and strengthen my racing mindset. Being surrounded by athletes who are just as committed will push me to raise my own standards.

What excites me most is that the Pho3nix Futures Camp takes a holistic approach to sport. It emphasises nutrition, routines, goal-setting and the importance of having a supportive environment — all of which influence performance far beyond swimming.

Outside the pool, I know the camp will help me build confidence, resilience and leadership skills. Learning to manage pressure, balance commitments and stay consistent will support my growth both as an athlete and as a person.”

Can you share a challenge you’ve faced in your swimming journey so far, and how attending this camp motivates you moving forward?
“One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is managing the pressure and intensity of training. Balancing early mornings, long sessions, schoolwork and racing expectations can feel overwhelming at times. Competing against older or more experienced swimmers can also make me question whether my hard work is paying off.

My family has always been my biggest support. Swimming requires sacrifice, and their encouragement — from early drives to training to believing in me on the hardest days — helps me keep going.

Being invited to the Pho3nix Futures Camp motivates me to push even further. It reminds me that the difficult days are part of the journey and that my dedication is making a difference.”

How do you hope to use what you learn at the Pho3nix camp to inspire others in the UWC Thailand community?
“I hope to use what I learn to show others at UWC Thailand that dedication and consistency lead to real progress, in sport and beyond. I want to share the mindset tools and training habits I gain with my teammates and younger swimmers, especially when motivation is low.

I also hope to apply these lessons through the Student Athletic Council by supporting initiatives that promote a positive and committed sporting culture. By bringing back what I learn about nutrition, goal-setting and resilience, I hope to help shape programmes that encourage students to challenge themselves and feel proud of their growth.

Leading by example is important to me, and if I can inspire even a few students to believe in themselves or try something new, I’ll feel proud to have contributed to our community.”
