From Awareness to Action: Student-Led Initiatives at the Grade 7 Sustainability Fair
Heidi Oxley-Whitnell, UWC Thailand, CAS & Community Engagement Coordinator

At UWC Thailand, community engagement is a vital part of how students learn, grow, and connect with the world around them. As part of our commitment to experiential learning and meaningful partnerships, grade 7 students recently collaborated with the Phuket Home for the Elderly in Paklok. This partnership was more than a school project—it offered a powerful opportunity for learning and contribution.

A highlight of this experience was the Grade 7 Sustainability Fair, where students showcased products they had designed and created in response to environmental issues they observed in their community. Using old clothes, CDs, and natural materials, they produced tote bags, candles, soaps, pet toys, home décor, and more. These creations reflected their understanding of sustainability and their effort to reduce waste through creative repurposing.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Sustainability Fair. A total of THB 12,410 was raised, and all proceeds will go directly to support the Phuket Home for the Elderly—a valued community partner throughout the year. This contribution will make a meaningful impact on their ongoing care and wellbeing initiatives.

The Sustainability Fair is a testament to the value of student-led action. From identifying environmental concerns to developing practical solutions, grade 7 students demonstrated initiative, creativity, and a deepening awareness of how their efforts can drive real change in their community.

"What stood out most was how our students took ownership of the process—from identifying local issues to creating tangible solutions. This wasn’t just about making things; it was about making a difference." —Heidi Oxley-Whitnell, UWC Thailand, CAS & Community Engagement Coordinator
