Fostering Literacy in the Early Years and Primary Years Programme at UWC Thailand
Caryl Medilo, UWC Thailand Primary School Literacy Leader

At UWC Thailand, literacy is at the heart of learning from the Early Years through Primary. Students are supported to develop strong reading, writing, and vocabulary skills, helping them explore ideas, express themselves, and think critically across all subjects.

Recently, Fiona Hamilton, founder of Wordtorque, visited UWC Thailand to work with our teaching team. Fiona guides educators to develop the knowledge and strategies needed to support students’ spelling, reading, and vocabulary across all subject areas, within a framework that also encourages agency in critical thinking. Her expertise complements our commitment to embedding literacy throughout every part of the curriculum.

Leading this work at UWC Thailand is Caryl Medilo, Literacy Leader. Reflecting on the visit, she shared:

"Fiona’s guidance has equipped our teachers with new strategies to incorporate word inquiry into our literacy lessons meaningfully. Her support has inspired students to become more curious about the history of words, helping them grow as confident word noticers and word knowers."

Through this partnership and focus on literacy, UWC Thailand nurtures young learners who are confident readers, expressive writers, and independent thinkers, ready to engage meaningfully with the world around them.
