Discovering the Art of Muay Thai

Discovering the Art of Muay Thai
By Ali Wyatt, Head of Physical Education

Grade 9 students explore Thailand's national sport — its history, its culture, and the ancient ritual of giving thanks.

This term, Grade 9 students have been immersed in one of the most culturally rich units of their MYP Physical and Health Education journey: a dedicated exploration of Muay Thai, Thailand's celebrated martial art and national sport. Far more than a fitness or combat unit, this has been an opportunity for students to connect deeply with the country they call home, understanding the profound cultural significance of a tradition that stretches back centuries.

"It is such a special unit — and the students have learnt so much about movement, culture, and the art of gratitude."

The unit kicked off in memorable fashion with an opening talk from Kru Amy, one of our very own Early Years teachers and a former Muay Thai World Champion. Her story immediately captivated the class, giving students a remarkable opportunity to ask questions, hear first-hand accounts of elite competition, and discover what makes Muay Thai such an extraordinary discipline. It was exactly the kind of inspiring, real-world connection that brings learning to life.

The Wai Khru: A Ritual of Respect

A highlight of the unit has been learning about the Wai Khru, the ceremonial pre-fight ritual in which Muay Thai fighters pay respect and give thanks to their teachers, trainers, and ancestors. Students not only studied the tradition and its spiritual roots, but planned and developed their own Wai Khru performances, bringing a deeply personal creative and cultural dimension to their learning.

Throughout the unit, students developed their movement composition skills, learning the precise techniques and footwork that underpin Muay Thai, while building an appreciation for the sport's many representations in Thai society and beyond. This dual focus on physical skill and cultural knowledge is at the heart of what makes the unit so meaningful within the MYP framework.

The progress on display has been outstanding. Students have shown dedication, curiosity, and a genuine respect for the traditions they have been exploring. It has been wonderful to see them engage so wholeheartedly with a uniquely Thai experience, and a reminder of how sport can be one of the most powerful doorways into understanding a culture and its people.
