Celebrating Excellence within UWC Thailand's Alternative Pathways to Graduation

Celebrating Excellence within UWC Thailand's Alternative Pathways to Graduation
Laura Worasaktayanan, UWC Thailand Head of Learning Support

We are thrilled to announce that our ASDAN external moderation for the 2024–25 academic year has been successfully completed — and once again, we passed with flying colours! For the second consecutive year, UWC Thailand has received commendation from the governing body for the exceptional quality of our students' work and the organisation of documentation by our dedicated Learning Support Team.

This achievement reflects the hard work, dedication, and talent within our school community. Most importantly, we celebrate our amazing students who have demonstrated such commitment to their learning journey. Congratulations to everyone involved in this tremendous success!

ASDAN: A Gateway to Success

The ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) offerings at UWC Thailand are central to our commitment to personalised education. This framework recognises the diverse ways young people learn, grow, and contribute to their communities.

What makes ASDAN courses particularly meaningful at UWC Thailand is how they integrate with our mission and values as a UWC school. Many courses and challenges focus on community engagement, understanding global issues to promote peace, and developing awareness of environmental impacts.

ASDAN courses share strong connections with our PEAK and CAS programmes, and our teams collaborate closely to enhance inclusion and belonging. The variety of ASDAN courses allows students to gain recognition and certification for their achievements beyond the traditional classroom setting.

For some students, short courses such as Gardening, Expressive Arts, and Foodwise — which can begin as early as grade 6 — are the most suitable options. These short course credits can also support completion of the International Award Programme (IAP). UWC Thailand recognises the IAP Gold qualification as a course within our High School Diploma requirements, helping to create flexible pathways that honour different learning styles and interests.

The International Award Programme (IAP): Where Passion Meets Qualification

The International Award Programme (IAP), a Level 2 internationally recognised qualification, enables students to study modules that genuinely reflect their interests and passions. Whether it’s photography, community service, or environmental conservation, students can accredit the time they spend pursuing these interests toward their high school diploma. This approach validates the learning that occurs when students are intrinsically motivated and engaged with subjects they care deeply about.

The vocational style of learning embedded in the IAP extends far beyond academic achievement. Students develop essential life skills that employers consistently identify as valuable — including planning and organisation, leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities. These skills not only enhance their personal growth but also support success across all areas of their studies.

Currently, four students are enrolled in the IAP, one of the minimum four courses required to graduate with the UWC Thailand Diploma. Alongside the IAP, UWC Thailand continues to offer a wide range of ASDAN short courses, including Gardening, Foodwise, Expressive Arts, Key Steps, and Mathematics.

Celebrating Our Students’ Achievements

This year’s moderation results highlight the perseverance and commitment of our students. Koko celebrated success, with both his Bronze and Silver work moderated and approved just before the deadline. He is now working toward his Gold IAP as part of his UWC Thailand Diploma.

It was also a proud day for Paul, UWC Thailand Class of 2025, who returned to campus this week to collect his International Award Programme Gold certificate. Paul’s achievement supports his next steps toward a foundation course in Hospitality at César Ritz Colleges, Switzerland — a wonderful example of how our pathways empower students to follow their passions into the future.

Many Roads to Success

Congratulations once again to all our students, families, and staff who make these achievements possible. Your dedication continues to prove that there are many roads to success, and UWC Thailand is proud to help each student find their own.
